Devils Backbone Brewing Company Wins Medal in International Beer Competition

Nelson County, Virginia • May. 5, 2012 – Devils Backbone Brewing Company recently claimed a gold medal in the 2012 World Beer Cup®, a global beer competition presented by the Brewers Association (BA) that evaluates beers from around the world and recognizes the most outstanding brewers and their beers.

Gold, silver and bronze awards in the competition’s 95 beer-style categories were presented May 5, 2012 during the World Beer Cup Gala Awards Dinner at the Town and Country Resort in San Diego, California.

Devils Backbone Brewing Company was awarded a gold medal in the Vienna Style Lager category for its Vienna Lager with amber chestnut colored good looks and a smooth malty finish; it blends the color and flavor without heaviness or bitterness.  Just as Vienna Lagers historically inspired Munich’s Oktoberfest beers to evolve, this amber lager has evolved since we opened in 2008 into an award winning beer it is today.  Devils Backbone Brewery  was established in November 2008 as a brew pub in Nelson County producing just under 1000 barrels per year (one barrel equals 2 kegs or 13 cases) on a 10 hectoliter three vessel brewing system.  In 2012, Devils Backbone Brewing Company commissioned a 30 barrel production brewery and tap room in Rockbridge County to bottle and keg their beer throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia and beyond with the total capacity of the new facility to be north of 30,000 barrels.

“Of our core lineup of our year round craft brands, the Vienna Lager is one of our most popular beer styles and it is a silver medalist at the 2009 Great American Beer Festival. The Vienna Lager is a very approachable session beer in which both new and experienced craft beer lovers appreciate and enjoy its refreshing and pleasing taste.  This award at the World Beer Cup continues our endorsement, by our peers, as one of the most highly recognized craft breweries in the world. While we are happy with our achievements we owe our success to our highly talented staff and by no small measure the many supporters and fans of Devils Backbone over the last three years”, says owner Steve Crandall. “Thank you for supporting our vision”.

World Beer Cup winners were selected by an international panel of 218 beer judges from 29 countries. The competition—referred to as the “Olympics of Beer Competition”—saw an impressive field of nearly 4,000 entries from 828 breweries in 56 countries. The 2012 competition drew the largest, most international field of entrants in the history of the World Beer Cup
