The Devils Backbone Lumberjack Classic is Virginia’s #1 Timber Sports Competition. This annual event draws the top-ranked lumberjacks and lumberjills from around the world to compete in the following disciplines: Standing Block Chop, Underhand Chop, Springboard, Stock Saw, Hot Saw, Single Buck, Double Buck, and Jack & Jill. 

Yes and Yes! We regularly host the best timbersports athletes at the world and have had competitors from 47 states and 3+ countries outside of the United States! Some of the athletes competing this fall include Matt Cogar, Martha King, Matyas Klima, Samatha Graves

Immediately after the competition ends on Saturday [9/20] there will be an Athlete Meet & Greet session where you will have the opportunity to receive a free wood cookie from the competition, speak to the athletes, and get autographs.

Fun is on the schedule all weekend, but the Lumberjack Classic events will take place:

·       Friday, September 19th 4:00 PM – 6:00 PM

·       Saturday, September 20th 11:30 AM – 6:00 PM

The lumber used during the Devils Backbone Lumberjack Classic is sourced from Princeton, WV. These white pine trees were planted on an old mine strip because they are a fast-growing species and allow the heavily disturbed land to have deep rooted ground cover. Now that the land has had time to recover from the mine reclamation, the forest management program calls for the pine monoculture to be removed and more natural, native to the area species to begin regeneration.

After being used in the competition, one of three things will happen to the wood:

·       Wood discs aka “cookies” are given away as souvenirs

·       Scrap wood is dried and cut into firewood

·       Sawdust is composted

In addition to the 5th Annual Lumberjack Classic, we are kicking off the Oktoberfest season here at Devils Backbone! Our pubs will be decked out in Oktoberfest décor and serving up German-inspired beer and food specials September 19th – October 12th. Join us all weekend long for stein hoisting competitions, live music, craft vendor markets, and Oktoberfest-fun for the entire family!

The event will continue in light rain. Heavy rain, lightning or other severe weather may cause delays or result in a cancellation on a case by case basis.

Absolutely no weapons (including but not limited to firearms, projectile weapons, ammunition, bladed, edged, or sharp tools or implements, club-like items and striking devices, explosives or combustible chemical compounds and mixtures, and disabling chemicals such as mace or pepper spray), illegal substances, illicit goods, fireworks, laser pointers, drones, outside food or beverages, professional cameras, coolers, baskets, tents or pets (with the exception of service animals) will be permitted at the event.

No outside food or drinks are allowed. Food and beverages are available throughout the property prior to, during, and after the show. Valid photo identification is required to purchase alcohol.

Yes. Lawn chairs and blankets are permitted inside the event area. Seating is first-come, first-served. Please respect others’ property. We are not responsible for lost or damaged items.

Shade tents are permitted behind the paved walkway.

Yes - we love when you bring your furry friends to hang out! We do like to remind owners that this event does get LOUD, just in case your furry friend isn’t a fan of chainsaws.
